LITTLE JAKE & MANY SKIES STRIKE
GOLD, completes a trilogy to the Little Jake
western adventure series. The kids live on the
Double C Ranch, neighbour to the world famous
Douglas Lake Cattle Company. Tension exists
between Little Jake and Many Skies because
she’s ‘fooled’ with the cowboss’ stud, Rebel.
He is jealous of her ability in handling horses.
Little Jake is incensed that she broke the
‘buckaroo code’ by working the stud without
the owner’s permission. One afternoon,
Little Jake rides out to his favourite place,
the Upper Meadows. To his chagrin he spots
Many Skies following on Rebel. He tries to
lose her by riding high into the hills. Soon
they are caught in a bad thunderstorm.
Little Jake decides the closest shelter
would be Pearl Crebbin’s log cabin, deep
in the forest. Totally drenched, they dry
out around Pearl’s kitchen stove. After
cookies and hot chocolate, the spinster
hands them a tattered map. The map
belonged to Billy Miner, Canada’s
famous train robber. Saddle up your
pony and ride along with Little Jake
and Many Skies as they search for
Billy Miner’s hidden cache! |

No one can deny the lure of the West. Our enduring fascination with cowboys and dusty trails, the open range and most of all, horses, provides great entertainment and inspiration for kids and adults. A cowboy poet who has already published a book of trail-mix verse, Silk 'n' Silver, Gerald "Jake" Conkin offers up a Western adventure novel for kids in Little Jake's Cowdog. A rustic tale that draws young readers away from the noxious fumes of the city and the glare of TV screens, this adventure novel recalls a time when a buckaroo could leap onto his - or her - horse and ride off into the sunset. |

Silk 'n Silver: Cowboy Poetry
Author: Jake Conkin
Format: Trade Paperback · Published: October 1991
Dimensions: 56 Pages, 6 x 9 in
ISBN: 0969530005
Published by BUCKAROO JAKE PRODUCTIONS
Cowboy poetry is far from its brethren in big Canadian cities, where angst, debauchery and malaise are often the dominant themes. As Jake Conkin shows, this genre of the open air, horseback and stretching plains is a celebration of a more clearly articulated lifestyle, even a more romantic one at that. Silk ‘n Silver is a great testament to the West and a unique collection for readers of Canadian poetry. |
